The magic of the holiday season returns to Atlanta with Atlanta Ballet’s beloved production of The Nutcracker. The ballet takes center stage at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre from December 6 through December 27. With 20 family-friendly performances accompanied by a live orchestra, this timeless classic remains one of the most anticipated and cherished productions in Atlanta Ballet’s repertoire.

A Visually Stunning Holiday Classic
Internationally acclaimed choreographer Yuri Possokhov brings Atlanta Ballet’s The Nutcracker to life with a visually stunning and emotionally immersive experience for audiences of all ages. Possokhov, who reimagined the production exclusively for Atlanta Ballet in 2018, brings the story to life through intricate costumes, magnificent hand-painted sets, and advanced production elements that elevate the ballet beyond tradition. The production features Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, performed live by the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra. Together, these elements create a theatrical experience unmatched in the Southeast.
Set in a charming yuletide German town, the story follows a young girl on a magical journey filled with toy soldiers, mischievous mice, and a dreamlike adventure to the Land of Sweets. Audiences recognize Atlanta Ballet’s interpretation as one of the most technically advanced and experimental renditions of The Nutcracker.
The Scale and Magic Behind the Production
Behind the scenes, the scale of the production is just as impressive. Each season, nine semi-trucks transport more than 250 costumes and eight tons of lighting, scenery, and props to Cobb Energy Centre. The production also features dancers of all ages, including 195 students from the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education, with 35 children appearing in each performance, further highlighting the company’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists.

Beyond the stage, the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre transforms into a festive winter wonderland throughout the run. Guests are welcomed by holiday décor, Christmas trees, and snowflakes, along with specialty photo opportunities in the lobby. Before and after the performance, audiences can browse the Atlanta Ballet Boutique for holiday gifts and enjoy seasonal treats such as hot cocoa, apple cider, and holiday cocktails. A pre-show DJ sets the tone with beloved holiday music, making the entire evening feel like a celebration.
A Beloved Atlanta Holiday Tradition
“For generations, The Nutcracker has been a time-honored tradition where Atlantans gather to make special holiday memories,” says Tom West, Executive Director of Atlanta Ballet. Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin adds that the production continues to captivate audiences through its innovative choreography and immersive storytelling, while showcasing Atlanta Ballet’s excellence as a premier dance company.
In addition to the full production, Atlanta Ballet will present four Kids In Step performances on December 9, 10, 11, and 17, offering an abbreviated version of The Nutcracker and a behind-the-scenes look at the magic of ballet for thousands of children in the community.
Through a partnership with the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel, located adjacent to Cobb Energy Centre, special stay packages are also available for Nutcracker guests looking to turn the performance into a festive holiday outing.

Atlanta Ballet’s The Nutcracker continues a 66-year tradition, bringing artistry, wonder, and holiday spirit to Atlanta audiences year after year.
