Cuevacía: Colony Square’s New Crown

When one thinks “empty cave”, they don’t normally picture a renovated two-floor eatery designed by the ineffably talented Courtney Goodrich of Goodrich Design. Atlanta native William Pitts is looking to change that by bringing genuine Oaxacan cuisine to Colony Square. Five years after opening his fine-dining establishment, Saints + Council, Pitts is ready to show the world his next culinary endeavor with Cuevacía, an Oaxacan-inspired restaurant whose name translates to “empty cave”. For Atlantans in the mood for exemplary pre-Hispanic northern Mexican food, Cuevacía opened its doors on January 27th.

“I’ve long envisioned having a concept at the front of Colony Square that fills Midtown’s missing niche for elevated Mexican cuisine, and I’m honored to bring that dream to life alongside such an incredible team with the opening of Cuevacía,” Pitts remarked. “I’m a very proud Atlantan, and to now own not only one but two restaurants at the heart of the city in such an iconic location, surrounded by reputable institutions like the High Museum and Fox Theatre, is truly a blessing.”

Bringing Pre-Hispanic northern Mexico to current Midtown Atlanta, Cuevacía’s elegant architecture and decor are inspired by ancient Oaxacan building designs. Two floors of intimate lighting and dapper furniture make Cuevacía the perfect spot for intimate date nights or for groups of friends looking to catch up. The ambience is versatile and meant to be enjoyed in good company.

The delectable menu of Cuevacía pulls inspiration from Oaxaca’s rich history. Although Spanish culture has certainly played a role, the indigenous peoples of northern Mexico’s pre-Hispanic era deserve credit for creating these meals from scratch. The Zapotec, Mixtec, and Mazatec peoples are among the most influential originators of Oaxacan culinary excellence. Conventional cooking ingredients are used to recreate Oaxacan cuisine that has rightfully stood the test of time. Shareable appetizers like elote, mollete, and fresh queso are a few of the traditional Oaxacan dishes included in Cuevacía’s faithful menu. Even featured desserts like mouthwatering caramel flan or ambrosial chocolate tres leches cake are suited to the restaurant’s theme. Whether it be for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or anything in between, Cuevacía is committed to honoring traditional Oaxacan cuisine correctly.
