BeetleCat, located in Atlanta’s lively Inman Park neighborhood, might make you forget you’re not by the shore. Opened in 2016 by Atlanta-based chef/restaurateur Ford Fry, this oyster-ette presents a retro experience full of seafood, handcrafted cocktails, and good times.
Named after a wooden sailing dinghy, Beetlecat fashions large, unique doors inspired by tugboat windows through which guests are swept away into a sea of nostalgia. Inside, the bright blue cushioned bar stools and yellow tea lights perched upon each table enhance the nautical ambiance. With two outdoor patios—one for each upper and lower level—guests can enjoy a dynamic experience.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of speaking with Chef Davis who suggested that an ideal dining experience would “start by getting acclimated with oysters and a cocktail.” While the cocktail menu boasts a variety of citrus flavors, the oyster menu features a diverse selection of fresh, raw oysters that range from salty and nutty to sweet and buttery tastes. So I primed my palette with a refreshing Bourbon Orange Punch and an order of the Point aux Pins oysters, which were buttery with a mild brine and a clean finish.
Next, I enjoyed a few guest-favorite starters including the Salt & Pepper Squid, Smoked Fish Dip, House Salad, and Fry Bread.

A unique aspect of BeetleCat is that the dinner menu showcases a delicious medley of flavors that span from coast to coast. Notably, Pan Asian, Brazilian, and Latin American influences are highlighted by menu items such as the Moqueca Stew, Ceviche, and Bok Choy. I had a difficult decision to make, but like the sign outside says, ‘The Ship is Yours,’ so I ultimately landed on the Moqueca Stew and the Specialty Lobster Roll.
And since the ship was mine, I figured I’d indulge in a Mocha Crunch Cake for dessert.
In line with the goal of creating a communal sharing experience, the table was full and all set, illuminated by the dim glow of ‘Esteban’—the woodfire oven anchored at the heart of the oyster bar.
What’s more, a smaller, cozy cocktail lounge resides just below the deck in the 70s surf shack-inspired “Den.” A spacious staircase descends into the space, which warmly invites guests with its homey decor and fun music.

BeetleCat provided a hospitable experience that was both unique and multi-dimensional. The quality of the food and the staff was exceptional and welcoming. This is a place where anyone can come for any kind of occasion. Whether you’re enjoying a meal with loved ones, or exchanging awkward glances on a first date, BeetleCat can be your ship for the day!
