Beyond the steadfast highway that hugs the Pacific Coast, at the limit of a long stretch of Malibu beach, lies a shoreline sanctuary. Perched above the sand, the western surf washes in beneath its cantilevers at high-tide, every breaker crashing down for the weekend ahead. Its figure matches that of the sea, and each swell is echoed in the contours of its character. To passersby it appears buoyant, floating on the space between its foundation and the glistening current; but to its dwellers, it is an asylum from the world outside the road that precedes it—an amicable escape to the crisp salt air.

Its figure matches that of the sea, and each swell is echoed in the contours of its character. The aptly named “Wave House” covers over 3,200 square feet, taking its shape from the translucent crests of the Pacific Ocean. Its angular structure is an ode to human engineering, a sleek machine standing over the ebb and flow of every tide. But the home’s lustrous exterior is as much function as it is beauty; function in the way of providing its owner breathtaking perspectives of the endless horizon, that is. Its architect, London-born Mark Dziewulski, imagined it with windows which are predated only by beach views on three sides (hidden away by greenery on its forth). 

Inside, the home continues its relationship with the coastline through its main spaces which are fitted with walls of glass, ultimately providing a rather dramatic effect—no matter which room one visits. The interior is designed to be ideal for weekend entertaining, able to adapt to blissful celebrations and quiet evenings alike. White walls, stonework and wooden ceiling accents elicit visions of life at sea, one perhaps aboard the sunny decks of some newly-built Christensen. Similar to the barrel of every wave, its smooth, contemporary furnishings mirror that of its silhouette in a way which equates to the home’s overall fluidity.

For its part, Wave House does not intrude on the environment in which it exists. The design was created on the footings of an existing home, meaning Dziewulski and his associates were cautious not to disturb the beach or local sea life. This in turn saved the team from creating excessive building waste, as they were able to recycle some of the structure and mold it into what it is without demolition.

Looking outward to the infinite western skyline, Wave House’s facade sits atop the sea with expansive decks and fire pits for evening (or morning) lounging. However, its entirety cannot be summed up merely by the life it encapsulates, but in its palatability. It is last in a row of adjacent houses, and very visible to the tens of thousands of cars which pass each day. A project such as Wave House isn’t just a beautiful weekend home, it is the epitome of beachfront luxury—a Malibu landmark, one that evokes the fondest West Coast dream.

About the Architect

Like all projects Mark Dziewulski endeavors, he personally lead the Wave House project—ensuring meticulous attention to detail. Based in California, and a member of the American Institute of Architects, he has completed projects throughout Asia, Europe and the US (and is licensed in the latter two). Dziewulski places priority on conserving energy, sustainable practices, the use of cutting-edge technology and above all, captivating design. With a variety of innovative projects already completed, his design is quickly becoming recognizable through his own audacious style.
