“Don’t play the saxophone, let it play you.” was once said by the legendary 20th century saxophonist and virtuoso, Charlie Parker. To master such a soulful instrument requires the musician to spend countless hours honing their skills. Today, there isn’t a better example of a saxophonist giving himself over to the music than the prominent Atlanta-based musician and composer, Allanonsax. He’s a premier talent for both live performances and studio recordings. He’s found great success in live performances for a number of high-level corporate clients such as Google and Meta. He’s also appeared on NPR Tiny Desk, has had his music appear on the Paramount Network series, Bar Rescue, and works with mainstream artists such as Rick Ross, J.I.D, 6lack, and Teddy Swims.

. Starting his saxophone journey in 1998, Allan Knighton would hone his skills for 10 years before becoming a professional saxophonist in 2008. Over his career, Allanonsax has brushed shoulders with music legends such as Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. In our interview, he spoke glowingly about the now defunct Apache Cafe in Atlanta. According to Knighton, it was instrumental in helping musicians network amongst each other and sharpen their skills. Icons like the legendary singer Patti Labelle and Mike Philips, the first musician signed to Michael Jordan’s Nike Jordan brand were among the famous faces you could see frequenting the cafe. When asked what advice he has for younger and novice artists, Knighton asserted that chasing goals and creating the outcomes no matter the circumstances are key aspects to finding footing in the entertainment industry.

Briefly a teacher, Knighton fully committed to his artistry and has risen among the ranks of Atlanta musicians to become a reputable and connected musician in the Atlanta entertainment industry as well as throughout the country. Utilizing the internet and social media, Knighton has been able to navigate the volatility of a constantly evolving music industry.
