Alphonso Buie’s Vision Behind Place of Peace

In the world of interior design, where trends often dominate over personal meaning, Place of Peace stands out. Founded by Dr. Alphonso A. Buie, a Chicago native with a doctorate in business, the design brand was never part of a grand plan, but rather, a natural extension of his upbringing, creativity, and spiritual philosophy.

“I grew up in a space where creativity was more necessity than luxury—repurposing, rearranging, and making something out of nothing, Alphonso said. That taught me that design isn’t about having the most, but making the most out of what you have. Peace came from the intention behind every item.”

The Philosophy Behind Place of Peace

Born and raised in Chicago, Alphonso grew up in an environment that shaped not just who he is but how he views space.

“My grandmother always told me, ‘Your home should always be a place of peace,’” he shared. That idea, deeply rooted in emotional well-being and personal sanctuary, inspired the name of his business and continues to drive every design decision.

Unlike generic interior designs, Alphonso’s work is custom-tailored to each client’s personality, story, and lifestyle.

“I listen carefully to what my clients want. Their Pinterest boards, Instagram inspirations—they tell a story. My job is to bring that story to life with my creative vision.”

With a background in the Chicago Park District, Alphonso learned sewing, woodworking, painting, and electronics– all skills that later became tools in his design toolkit. “I was always handy, always crafting,” he said. “I didn’t know how, but I always figured it out.”

Although Alphonso holds a doctorate in business and has spent years as a professor, interior design unexpectedly found him. After traveling the world, he returned to the U.S. and purchased a home during the pandemic. With no furniture and an open slate, he began designing his own place of peace. Once he posted his finished space on social media, friends began asking him to do their homes as well. The rest, as they say, is history.

“I don’t have a signature style or templates. I listen to my client first and see what pieces they already have,” Alphonso explained. “Every space is unique because every person is unique. I like for each design to be its own piece.”

His global travels have deeply influenced his creative approach. “I’ve lived in China and traveled all over the world. Seeing different spaces and how they function helped me think outside the box—actually, there is no box,” he laughed. “That’s how I bring innovation into every project.”

Alphonso is no stranger to hard work and hands-on involvement. “I’m pretty handy. Sometimes I’m putting up wallpaper, painting, or actually creating something,” he said. One of his favorite projects was building a waterfall living-edge island and designing a family picture wall with antique frames for a client.

His business also became a way to build community. “I’ve become part of my clients’ families,” he said, reflecting on the close relationships he’s formed. Mentorship matters to him as well: “I recently took on an intern, Cory. It’s been enjoyable showing him what I know and hopefully he’s learning something.”

Above all, Alphonso’s work is about peace and purpose. “I’m much happier and in a happy space. My quality of life has improved. I’m 1000% me,” he said. “I get to develop my own culture and make every space a place of peace.”
